O'kyu Moxa is a practice of burning an herb called Mugwart (arternisia vulgaris) to add heat to acupuncture points.
This is done in a way that is very safe and pleasant for the patient. First we protect the skin by applying a layer of
herb cream called Shiunko, then we place rice-grain size pieces of Moxa on top and light it with a Japanese incense
stick. We repeat this process until the patient reports a nice warm sensation in the area.
Mugwart or Moxa is chosen for this technique due to its ability to promote circulation and
stimulate acupuncture points. Applying heat through a different method would not have the
same effect.
Moxibustion may be unfamiliar to a lot of patients - even those who have had acupuncture treatments, but it has been
a part of Oriental medicine for centuries - longer than the practice of needling. The Chinese character for the word
"acupuncture" serve as good example of the importance of this technique. The character is made up of two parts, one
of which is the character for Moxa. In other words, you can't have the word "acupuncture" without including Moxa.
To make your acupuncture treatment the most effective it can be, we will incorporate some or all of the following.
